“The New Queen of Clay?” Inside the Explosive Race for the Women’s Title at

☆The women’s draw at may be the most unpredictable Paris edition in nearly a decade. Unlike previous years dominated almost entirely by Iga Swiatek, the 2026 tournament arrives with at least five realistic contenders carrying elite clay-court form, statistical momentum, and tactical advantages into Paris.

●Despite losing ground in the rankings race earlier this spring, Swiatek remains the psychological favorite on clay. Her movement on slow courts and ability to dominate long rallies still make her the player most feared inside the women’s locker room. Recent improvements under coach Francisco Roig have also restored some of her confidence after an inconsistent hard-court swing.

●However, the biggest threat may now be Coco Gauff. The defending champion has evolved tactically, shortening points more effectively and becoming more aggressive on second-serve returns. Her back-to-back deep runs in Rome confirmed that her clay level is no longer based only on defense.

■World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka remains the most explosive power player in the draw, but her recent exits in Madrid and Rome raised concerns about consistency on slower surfaces. Still, statistically, she owns one of the best break-point saving percentages on tour this season.

The surprise name is Elina Svitolina. After winning Rome by defeating both Swiatek and Gauff, insiders now believe she has the mental toughness to finally win a Grand Slam title.

Predicted Chances to Win Roland-Garros 2026

Iga Swiatek — 30%

Coco Gauff — 24%

Aryna Sabalenka — 18%

Elina Svitolina — 8%

Mirra Andreeva — 4%

Field/Others — 2%

■ One hidden factor already being discussed privately around Paris: several coaches believe the slower and heavier clay conditions expected during opening week could dramatically favor defensive baseliners — which may quietly shift the tournament back toward Swiatek and Gauff by the second week.
